Forex (FX) is the nickname for the foreign exchange markets (currency) which is the off exchange trading (over the counter) in foreign currency.  The market is a 24 hours a day, 5 day a week operation that spans the globe from major markets starting with Sydney to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, London, and New York.

International investments and trade are aided by the foreign exchange markets by allowing businesses to convert one currency to another in exchange for products and services.

The modern foreign exchange market as we know it today started in the early 1970s as countries moved away from a fixed system to floating exchange rates as determined by traders through supply and demand with the occassional intervention by monetary authorities around the world.
